Another shift at the knowledge factory

January 24, 2005

Spring semester has started — although the 14″ of snow outside make it seem misnamed. And as with every January, I’m struck by how different the start of the semester feels than the start of fall. Fall always has a touch of freshness and excitement — coming back refreshed from the summer, new students who’ve yet to sink into relativistic or egoistic cynicism, beautiful weather, bustling classrooms and hallways. But Spring semester starts with the feeling of trudging through — through the snow, and through the sedimented resistance and indifferent malaise in students’ brains.

OK, it probably compounds it to know I’m going to be on sabbatical in the Fall. But still.
