Halloween quickies

Monday, October 31st, 2005

A couple of quick Halloween thoughts:We had a grand total of two groups of trick-or-treaters this year. Both were strangers -- except that Oz recognized at least one kid from each group from school (not his class). Of course, he knows everybody's name and what class they're in, ...

Fixed the last commenting bug

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Finally fixed that stupid bug where comments were showing as anonymous even if a name was entered. What a freakin' pain. But it's fixed now. And added the "Recent Posts" thing to the left-hand menu while I was at it.

Bush and Cheney are war criminals

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

In response to the NYTimes' Nicholas Kristof's call for Cheney's resignation, the usually very worthwhile For the Record rightly ups the ante, and argues (correctly) that we should send Cheney and Bush to the Hague to be tried as the war criminals they are. Go read it yourself; but here's a ...

Sulu and his sword

Friday, October 28th, 2005

George Takei, better known as Enterprise Helmsman Mr. Sulu, just recently came out. It was pretty much known (like anybody who ever saw him handling his sword in "The Naked Time" couldn't see that he was a steaming hunk of man-love), but he wasn't out. As a bit ...

No civil liberty protection for perverts

Thursday, October 27th, 2005

I guess it's not surprising that in the Bush era of utter obliteration of the rights of the accused, we get a complete violation of due process and double jeopardy that nobody in power actually opposes. Case in point: Our butthead Governor George Pataki (who has some delusion that he's ...

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

The usually good Media Matters for America has a nice piece pointing out that Fux News is starting to ramp up its "Stop the War on Christmas" campaign again this year: Fox renews war to save Christmas from the "loony left" and ACLU. A couple of excerpts: On the ...

Spam-killing changes

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

Just trying out some new comment-spam-killing stuff here. Hopefully, no effect on anybody but the comment-spam scumbags.

Publican choke-hold loosens

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

According to (right-leaning) Gallup, the "Favorable vs. Unfavorable impression" split on the 'Publican party has gone from 56/39 in February of this year, to 40/50 now. During the same period, the Dems have gone from 46/47 to 52/36. See the numbers here. It's not like the Dems have been ...

Book ‘em, Danno

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

I just wanted to quote this simple sentence from MSNBC's "DeLay booked on conspiracy charges": Rep. Tom DeLay turned himself Thursday in at the Harris County sheriff’s bonding office, where he was photographed, fingerprinted and released on bond on state conspiracy and money laundering charges. Man, that felt good.

Pick your nose and eat it

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

So, FlapArt sells "wacky" book cover that look like dust jackets of "real crazy" books. Cute, I guess. But I noticed today's featured cover, and it reminded me of one of my all-time favorite science news items: Top doc backs picking your nose and eating it (blogged here before as ...
