Sulu and his sword
October 28, 2005
George Takei, better known as Enterprise Helmsman Mr. Sulu, just recently came out. It was pretty much known (like anybody who ever saw him handling his sword in “The Naked Time” couldn’t see that he was a steaming hunk of man-love), but he wasn’t out.
As a bit of a Star Trek geek (hey, I once taught “Philosophy in Star Trek”, and still sometimes do “Philosophy in Science Fiction”), I of course have much fondness for Sulu, and George Takei has always seemed like a genuinely nice guy who embraced his place in pop culture (as a Trek icon, but also as one of the first prominent Asian-American actors) in a healthy way. And as a Japanese-American who’d been spent time unjustly incarcerated in an internment camp as a boy during WWII, he went on to a life with many stints of patriotic public service anyway. Basically, a mensch.
So you go, George.
