Confirming prejudice with evidence against it
May 11, 2006A colleague from another university who teaches an intro course exposing students to, among other things, the arguments undermining the existence of God and the lack of good arguments for God’s existence, got this bit of feedback at the end of the course from one of his students (spelling and punctuation corrected):
The first important thing that I learned in this class was that I already knew what my beliefs were. I never considered myself to be someone who believed in God really firmly but after hearing all of the evidence against His existence I realized that I didn’t go for any of it and refused to change my mind at all. I know now that none of this crap who so many people spend a lot of time thinking about is not something that I need to consider any more than I apparently already have subconsciously.
It’s good to open minds to the possibilities and the force of evidence and argument, isn’t it?
