Preachers gone wild

February 25, 2007

How can I not like this: The Rev. Lonnie W. Latham, another bible-thumping gay-bashing preacher, gets caught looking for some hot man-on-man action. Surprise, surprise; we all knew that loudest bashers are the ones with the biggest urge for the taste of manliness. And the arrest itself is old news, from last year.

The fun new kicker on this one is that the guy’s defense is being supported by the ACLU, and the defense’s line is that in the light of Lawrence v. Texas (the 2003 SCOTUS ruling that said A-OK to gay sex, and outraged homophobes everywhere), he has a constitutional right to solicit gay sex, as long as no money is mentioned. And the police admit there was no money; the charge is simple misdemeanor lewdness.

So it’s not just that he’s seeking the taste of manhood while bashing gays; but in his criminal defense, he turns to (what for the Religious Right is) the Devil (the ACLU) and the second most despised ruling by the Supremes (and if you don’t know what’s #1, go to the back of the line). Desperate times call for desperate measures, apparently.
