The first step back to coathangers and back alleys
April 18, 2007The Bush/Roberts court strikes its first major blow against reproductive rights: Court Backs Abortion Ban. Justice Kennedy sides with the forces of evil, and by a 5-4 margin, they ignore their own 2000 precedent and uphold a national ban on the abortion procedure called “intact dilation and evacuation”, and derided as “partial birth” abortion by the opponents of reproductive freedom.
Justice Ginsburg, the only remaining woman on the court, leads the dissent, saying the ruling “cannot be understood as anything other than an effort to chip away a right declared again and again by this court, and with increasing comprehension of its centrality to women’s lives.”
We will be paying for the Bush legacy for a generation to come.
