Gov. Spitzer backs gay marriage for NY
April 28, 2007OK, so as both a supporter of and sometime participant in (made you look) gay marriage, I’m happy to see that Elliot has proposed a bill legalizing gay marriage in NY — not some watered-down civil unions, BFFs, or other second-class citizen bullshit, but real, full blown marriage.
But does he have to to it with all the “it won’t really happen, I’m just making good on a kind of ’statement of principle’” rhetoric (see, for example, here)? From a guy who I’ve yet to see back down from a fight, how should I take this? A little “don’t worry; it won’t really happen” message to the “men kissing is yucky” lobby? C’mon Elliot: you’re a freakin’ pit bull, but this time you give up before the fight has started?
Of course, the New York Catholic Conference (big Cat’lic lobbying arm here in NY) once again reacts with anger that all legislation isn’t first vetted by them, which is apparently their Gob-given right. Apparently this action by Spitzer shows that “he is going out of his way to stick it to Catholics. He is trying to ram it down the throats of New York”.
Have to say, though, that even if the quitting before the fight is pissing me off, I gotta love that he can get the Cat’lic spokesperson go babbling on about “sticking it to us” and “ramming it down our throats”. Heh heh.
