R.I.P., Kermit

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

The president of my university, Kermit Hall, died suddenly this weekend in an apparent drowing incident (President of SUNY Albany Dies, Apparently Drowning; Mourners laud Hall's virtues). He was the best college president I've been around, showing the sort of vision and leadership claimed for many and posessed by few.

Stop the presses! Local circle jerk busted!

The Cinema Art Theater here in Troy has been a well-known glory hole for more than 20 years. It's a big old theatre in downtown Troy that runs porn all the time, has private booths -- you know. Everybody knows. They're quiet and clean, there's no ads ...

Strange repeller

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

Northeast Socked by Snowstorm; NYC Sets Record, but here in the Albany area, we get off with a couple of inches. It's uncanny how often the snow belt storms veer off before we get hit, and leave us with only glancing blows. Go 100 miles in a couple ...

Contraception coverage for Catholics

Friday, January 13th, 2006

Here in NY, a mid-level appeals court just rejected the attempt by the Katlick Church to get out of the NY law that forbids employers to refuse to cover prescription contraceptives in their health coverage. From Newsday's coverage ("Challenge to contraception law rejected by appeals court"): The law, which went ...

Lilies of the field

Friday, July 1st, 2005

For about 3-4 weeks each summer, these wild day lilies, mostly of the orange sort pictured here, are everywhere (this one is from the local unkempt cemetery). Then, they're gone. Sort of like the brief but stunning fall foliage season here. See my flickr page for a ...

The morning after my alien abduction experience

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

So, I expected that my 30 minutes of taped interview on alien abduction with the local Fox station would end up as 10 or 15 seconds of broadcast video -- maybe two sound bites. It ended up as about 3 seconds, although a perfectly good 3 seconds of me ...

You can’t lose what you don’t have, Scully

Monday, May 2nd, 2005

So, as somebody might remember, I was interviewed on-camera way back in late January by the local Fox station for a "Special Assignment" report on alien abductions, which I posted about in the appropriately-titled entry "I am a media slut". It was then delayed for lack of an abductee ...

Hitchcockian back-scratching backfires

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Ah, Karen. You bring shame upon us. OK, really more on you. My University's former prez, Karen Hitchcock, who left in a big hurry a year back, apparently had good reason: The NYState Ethics Commision was after her for allegedly trying to arrange a kickback of a named ...

A good abductee is hard to find

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2005

So the "alien abduction" story on the local Fox station that I was interviewed for (see the earlier post, I am a media slut) was scheduled for a couple of days ago, but they hadn't found a good abductee to talk to. Now, I'm told they've found one -- ...

New York is catching Gay Marriage Fever!

Friday, February 4th, 2005

Yeah! New York is on its way to following Massachusetts: Judge Rejects New York Ban on Same-Sex Marriage. In a victory for same-sex marriage advocates, a New York state judge in Manhattan ruled today that denying gay couples licenses to marry violates the State Constitution, and she ordered the ...
